Information

The A-Bomb Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the center of Hiroshima city. It is the only remaining structure that was close to the hypocenter of the atomic bombing that occurred on August 6, 1945, during World War II. The building was originally the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, but it was repurposed as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial after the bombing.

The A-Bomb Dome stands as a stark and haunting symbol of the destruction caused by nuclear weapons. The building was severely damaged by the explosion, but it has been preserved as it was after the bombing, with its concrete skeleton and dome-shaped roof intact. The surrounding Peace Memorial Park was built as a tribute to the victims of the bombing and features various monuments, including the Peace Flame, a cenotaph, and the Children's Peace Monument.

Visitors to the A-Bomb Dome can witness the devastation wrought by the atomic bomb firsthand, as the building is located just a few hundred meters from the hypocenter of the explosion. The stark contrast between the modern city that has been built up around the site and the ruined building is a reminder of the immense power of nuclear weapons and the need to prevent their use in the future.

Overall, the A-Bomb Dome is a deeply moving and thought-provoking site that serves as a powerful testament to the human cost of war and the importance of peace. Its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site and its location in the heart of Hiroshima city make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, peace, or international relations.
