The bridge plays a vital role in the transportation network of Perth, providing access to major roads, public transport, and the Perth CBD.
Canning Bridge was first constructed in 1849 as a wooden structure, and it was rebuilt in 1867 as a timber trestle bridge. The bridge was rebuilt again in 1939 as a concrete structure and widened in the 1950s to accommodate the increasing traffic.
Canning Bridge is a four-lane bridge with two lanes in each direction. The bridge also has a shared pedestrian and cycling path on both sides. The bridge has a total length of 402 meters and a height of 17 meters above the water level. The bridge features a unique arch design, which provides ample clearance for boats and watercraft to pass underneath.
Canning Bridge is a major transportation hub, providing access to several modes of transport. The bridge connects Canning Highway, which is one of Perth's major arterial roads, to the Kwinana Freeway, which is the main north-south freeway in Perth. The bridge also provides access to public transport, with a train station located on the eastern side of the bridge. The Canning Bridge train station is part of the Perth metropolitan rail network and provides services to the Perth CBD, Fremantle, and Mandurah.
