Hiking from Charlestown to Newcastle via The Great North Walk

Newcastle, Australia

The Map

The Facts

  • Start or End: I started at the Frederick Street bus stop at Charlestown Square (Google Map Directions) and finished at Queens Wharf, Newcastle (Google Map Directions). From Queens Wharf there are tram and bus options.
  • Length: 13.1km (8.2mi) in about 3.5hr
  • Grade: Medium. The track is well worn and rather easy to follow. There are a few hills to overcome in Glenrock State Conservation Area and at the aptly named, The Hill. I did need to jump over a stream in the bushland near Charlestown and certain sections could get muddy with rain. Be careful of conditions on the rocks along Burswood Beach. From Merewether into Newcastle, the trail is a nice wide concrete path, except for King Edward Park where you need to walk along a road.
  • Date Walked: 23rd of July 2019

The Story

My introduction to The Great North Walk includes bushland, waterfalls, beach strolls and stunning coastal views.

Be it seeing the city sights, exploring parklands and gardens, urban walks or day-hikes in the city outskirts, the metrotrekker website details walking routes and hiking trails accessible by foot and public transport in metropolitan areas.

The metrotrekker website provides you with all the details required for metropolitan exploration:

  • navigation formats compatible with common GPS devices, desktop browser/software or mobile apps
  • trail length and difficulty

  • photos/videos
  • attractions or points of interest along the way
  • other walks and hikes nearby
  • often a story or detailed description of the trail (I have personally walked every single trail on the website)
  • a comments section, so feel free to write about your experiences as well
  • and more improvements and resources are continually being added
